July, 2020: An "Orphan" On My
Doorstep
One day, out of nowhere and completely unannounced, this
appeared on my porch.
Inside the case was THIS. It clearly had not been out of
its box for many years.
Disintegrating 40 year old case foam was an issue.
Step one was to break out the shop vac. That took care of
the majority of the loose stuff on the outside of the
computer.
The shop vac quickly became full of pulverized foam.
After bringing it inside and opening it up to clean up the rest
of the foam (yes it worked it's way inside as well), and a
cleaning of the floppy-drive heads,
it was ready for an attempt at booting it up. Though it
DID boot up and load Procall, which itself is a big deal, it
didn't look very happy.
(If you happen to know specifically what's going on here,
please email
me.
The Eagle II is a single-board machine; video
functions are on the motherboard.)
As it happened I have a couple other AVL Eagle II's that could
act as donors. A swap of motherboards did the trick!
As for the case, after a great deal of cleaning it's now in my
office serving as a coffee table/ottoman/storage unit.
